Privacy Policy

Last updated: 29 June 2026

This policy explains what personal data Speaking for MET collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it. It reflects our obligations under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Who is responsible for your data

Speaking for MET is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. If you have any questions, or want to exercise your rights, contact us at support@speakingformet.com.

What data we collect

Category What it includes
Account details Your email address, first and last name, and (optionally) your occupation.
Sign-in data Session data, and - if you sign in with Google - your Google account identifier and basic profile. We sign you in with single-use magic links sent to your email, so we never collect or store a password.
Voice recordings and transcripts The audio you record for a speaking task and the text transcript produced from it. We keep the audio only for as long as we need it to transcribe it, then delete it and retain only the transcript.
Assessment results Your proficiency scores, CEFR level, written feedback, and the history of your attempts.
Billing data Your subscription status and a customer identifier from our payment provider. We never store your card details.
Preferences Whether you accepted our terms and whether you opted in to marketing email.

Why we use your data and our legal basis

Purpose Legal basis
Providing the speaking service, including transcribing your audio and grading it automatically. Performance of our contract with you.
Creating and securing your account (sign-in, sessions, sign-in links). Performance of our contract and our legitimate interest in keeping accounts secure.
Processing payments and managing your subscription. Performance of our contract and compliance with legal obligations.
Sending you marketing email. Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Monitoring errors and overall traffic to keep the site working. Our legitimate interest in a reliable, secure service.

Automated grading

Your speaking submissions are graded by an automated system that produces a proficiency level (CEFR) and written feedback. These results are intended to help you practise and are informational. They are not an official or certified assessment, and on their own they do not produce legal effects or otherwise significantly affect you. If a result matters to you and you would like a person to look at it, contact us at support@speakingformet.com and a member of our team will review it.

Who we share data with

We share your data only with service providers that help us run Speaking for MET. They process data on our instructions under a data-processing agreement:

Provider What they receive
Stripe Your email and name, to process payments and manage your subscription.
OVH AI Endpoints Your audio recordings (for transcription) and transcripts (for grading).
Google Sign-in details if you choose to sign in with Google.
Brevo Your email address, to deliver sign-in links and account emails.
Sentry Technical error reports. We configure it not to send personal data.
Simple Analytics Privacy-friendly, cookieless page-view statistics that do not identify you.

Transfers outside the EU

Some of our providers (Stripe, Google, and Sentry) are based in the United States, so using them involves transferring data outside the EU. Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. OVH AI Endpoints, Brevo, and Simple Analytics are based in the EU.

How long we keep your data

We keep your account and billing data for as long as you have an account. We do not store your audio recordings any longer than we need to transcribe them: each recording is deleted as soon as transcription finishes, or once transcription has finally failed. Your transcripts, assessment results, and attempt history are kept until you delete the submission or close your account. Session data lasts up to two weeks. Analytics and error data are kept for the limited periods set by those providers.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, and receive a copy in a portable format. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

You can update your name and occupation, change your email, and manage your marketing preferences from your account settings, and you can delete your account at any time. For anything else, contact us at support@speakingformet.com.

Right to lodge a complaint

If you believe we have handled your personal data unlawfully, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. We are established in Portugal, so our supervisory authority is the Comissao Nacional de Protecao de Dados (CNPD), whose website is www.cnpd.pt.

If you live in another country in the European Union, you may instead lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority in your country of residence. We would, however, appreciate the chance to address your concerns first, so please consider contacting us at support@speakingformet.com before you do.

Cookies

We use only essential cookies and a cookieless analytics tool. For details, see our Cookie Policy.

Children

Speaking for MET is not directed at children below the minimum age for consent for billable services in their country, and we do not knowingly collect their data.

How we protect your data

We sign you in with single-use magic links instead of passwords, serve the site over HTTPS, limit the access our payment provider key has, and configure error monitoring not to collect personal data.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date above.
